John Cleese, the 82-year old actor best known for his role in the classic British sitcom, Fawlty Towers, recently announced a reboot of the show after four decades since the final episode aired. However, his ex-wife, Connie Booth, who played the chambermaid Polly in the original series, has recently claimed that she was not informed of the project prior to it being announced. Booth spoke to The Times, saying “I’d have appreciated learning about the project from John rather than reading about it in the papers.” She also expressed surprise that Cleese is writing and performing in the new episodes with his daughter Camilla, whose mother is Cleese’s second wife, Barbara Trentham.
The revival will see Basil Fawlty grapple with the fact that he has a daughter he did not know existed, as well as trying to stay up to date with modern times. Rob Reiner, his wife Michele Reiner, director and producer Matthew George, and Derrick Rossi will act as executive producers for the series.
Despite this news, some viewers are unsure how to feel about the reboot, saying the original was ‘absolute perfection’ and fear it won’t be as funny. While Booth has admitted to being surprised by the announcement, she has wished Cleese and his daughter all the best of luck.
Fawlty Towers is available to stream on Prime Video.
