Zinc Media (LON:ZINC) has produced a compelling new BBC documentary titled “Bowelbabe: In Her Own Words”, which chronicles the last five years of the life of cancer campaigner Dame Deborah James. Known as Bowelbabe to her online followers, Dame Deborah James continued her cancer advocacy work through social media, her You, Me and the Big C podcast on BBC Radio 5 Live, and more, until her passing at the age of 40 in June 2022.
Set to be released Monday 17th April and featured on the front page of the Radio Times, the one-off film features never-before-seen mobile phone footage of Dame Deborah James candidly discussing her incurable bowel cancer diagnosis, her treatment, personal moments, and archival footage. The documentary provides a raw and honest look into living with bowel cancer and its impact on Dame Deborah James and those close to her.
Before her death, Dame Deborah James established the Bowelbabe Fund for Cancer Research UK, raising over £7 million, and authored the bestselling book “F*** You Cancer”. In May 2022, she raised an additional £6 million through the launch of her Bowelbabe Fund and was made a Dame by Prince William, who presented her with her Damehood in her parents’ garden.
The Bowelbabe Fund will continue to support causes and projects that Dame Deborah James was passionate about, including collaborations with the Institute of Cancer Research, The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, and Bowel Cancer UK.
Commissioning editor for BBC Storyville, Lucie Kon, described the documentary as “incredibly powerful and beautiful”, reflecting Dame Deborah James’ powerful, honest, and direct communication style. Despite not being able to see the finished film, Dame Deborah James worked on the documentary until the last weeks of her life, showcasing her unwavering determination and spirit. “Bowelbabe: In Her Own Words” is a moving tribute to the extraordinary life of a remarkable cancer campaigner.
