On Friday, February 10th, Emily Turner, 35, set off on a chilly journey from London to Edinburgh, Scotland. Using only local buses as part of the £2 local government bus program, Emily traveled nearly 400 miles over the course of three days. Along the way, she visited several cities including Northampton, Leicester, Derby, Newcastle, Whitby, and Berwick before arriving in Edinburgh.
Emily kept followers updated along her journey with posts on Twitter and even gained over 20,000 new followers in the process. She relied on Google Maps to plan her route and opted out of services not included in the £2 deal.
Emily noted that her favorite bus routes included those in the Midlands and Scottish Borders and the 840 Coastliner from Leeds to Whitby via York, which she noted was the most scenic bus in Britain. She was even gifted a ticket on the Lothian Buses open top tour while in Scotland.
Emily’s experience proves that it is possible to travel cross-country on local buses, and her journey has inspired others to plan similar trips. Emily’s next adventure is an interrail trip to Istanbul and back next month.
