Arsenal suffered a costly 3-1 defeat against Manchester City on Wednesday night at the Emirates Stadium. Pep Guardiola’s side regained top spot in the Premier League, while the Gunners have taken just eight points out of the last 18.

The game was decided in part by a goal from Jack Grealish which followed a loose pass from Gabriel. Ian Wright was critical of Gabriel’s defending and labelled it ‘naive’ and ‘inexperienced’. Wright explained that Gabriel played a blind pass which was easily pounced upon by Bernardo Silva. This allowed City to counterattack and Grealish to put them ahead.

Gabriel was lucky not to give away a penalty as VAR picked up an offside after he brought down Erling Haaland in the box. However, Wright believes Arsenal paid the price for Gabriel’s naivety and inexperience as he did not know where his pass was going.

It is clear that Arsenal need to improve their defence if they are to challenge for the Premier League title and Gabriel will have to learn from his mistakes if he is to remain part of the team.
